Eligibility

Only natural persons residing in Germany who have reached the age of 18 are eligible to participate. Participation in the prize draw is only possible in one’s own name. Employees of the Organiser and its affiliated companies, as well as their family members, are in no case eligible to participate.

The Organiser reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to exclude persons from participation if there are justified reasons, in particular in the event of

  • manipulations or other unfair influence in connection with the implementation of the prize draw;
  • false or misleading information in connection with participation in the prize draw or other violations of these terms and conditions of participation.

Exclusion from the prize draw may also occur where there are grounds for suspicion regarding the aforementioned points.

Participation

Participation is made by submitting a proposal for the speech bubbles by email to karikatur@sz.de. Proposals must be original, previously unpublished works. They must not infringe third-party rights and must not be offensive, discriminatory or unlawful. The editorial team reserves the right to exclude submissions that do not meet these requirements.

By submitting an entry by email, the participant accepts these terms and conditions. Participation is only possible until the closing date. Entries received after the closing date will not be considered in the draw.

The closing date for the competition is always Monday at 18:00. The electronically logged receipt of the email entry by the organizer serves as proof of timely submission.

Each participant also agrees to receive offers from Süddeutsche Zeitung GmbH until revoked (at widerruf@sz.de).

Each participant may enter the competition only once. In particular, it is prohibited to participate using multiple email addresses.

The organizer accepts no liability for the technical requirements of timely participation in the competition (e.g., constant access to web pages on which participation is possible). The liability section remains unaffected.

Prizes and notifications

The prize consists of the publication of the completed cartoon, bearing the name of the reader who provided the caption, on channels of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (print, digital, online and newsletter).

The editorial team selects the best submissions based on wit and relevance to the cartoon. The organizer determines whether the conditions for participation and winning have been met.

By submitting an entry, participants grant the SZ a non-exclusive right, unlimited in time and territory, to publish the submitted text within the scope of this competition in print, in the digital edition, online and in the newsletter. The rights to the cartoon remain with its creator.

Data protection

For participation in the competition, the provision of personal data is required.

This data is processed for the purpose of conducting the competition, sending out prizes and publishing the winners, for the performance of a contract pursuant to Art. 6 (1) sentence 1 lit. b) GDPR, and for direct marketing pursuant to, and where applicable, for direct marketing with consent pursuant to Art. 6 (1) sentence 1 lit. a) GDPR. The data will be deleted once the purpose has been fulfilled, unless statutory retention obligations apply.

In the event of a win, the winner agrees to the publication of their name and, where applicable, their place of residence in the advertising media used by the organizer. This includes announcing the winner on the organizer's website and its social media platforms.
